Three new lanostanoid triterpenes--ganotropic acid (1), 3β,7β,15α,24-tetra- hydroxy-11,23-dioxo-lanost-8-en-26-oic acid (2) and 3β,7β,15α,28-tetrahydroxy-11,23- dioxo-lanost-8,16-dien-26-oic acid (3)--were isolated from the n-BuOH extract of the fruiting bodies of the mushroom Ganoderma tropicum. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, as well as HR-EI-MS data.

Irradiation of &methyl spiro [2.5] oct-7-en-4-one through its singlet excited state resulted in the formation of 4-methyl spirO [2.5] oct-4-en -6-one. We have used the cyclopropyl moiety in the molecule as a probe to study the operating mechanism in the photochemistry of ?, ?-unsaturated compounds. The results showed that this photoisomerization probably occurs through a concerted process.

In the title compound, C(34)H(51)NO(2), the dihedral angle between the planes of the phenyl ring and the carbonyl group is 9.30 (2)°. No significant inter-molecular inter-actions are observed in the crystal structure. The C(5)H(11) fragment is disordered over two positions with site occupancies of 0.611 (6) and 0.389 (6).
